South Indian~Thattaipayiru Kulambu (Cow Peas/Black Eyed Peas)

Thattapayiru Kulambu is a typical South Indian dish.I got this recipe form my grandmother.Thattapayiru kulambu is my favorite recipe.Thattapayiru recipes are not only tasty but healthy too.Thattapayiru is one of the protein food.The delicious kulambu/gravy is prepared by using gram is a good side dish for rice and appalam.I am served only 2 members.

Ingredients:
  1. Cow Peas/Black Eyed Peas-75g
  2. Onion-1/2cup(chopped)
  3. Tomato-1/2
  4. Tamarind Juice-1/4cup
  5. Salt-to taste
  6. Oil-for frying
  7. Water-2cups
Grind:
  1. Shred Coconut-1/3cup
  2. Ginger-small piece
  3. Cinnamon-1/3stick
  4. Cloves-2
  5. Aniseeds-1/4tsp
  6. Curry Powder-1 1/4tsp
  7. Water-1/4cup
Seasoning:
  1. Mustard Seeds-1/4tsp
  2. Curry Leaves-1strand
  3. Cumin Seeds-1/4tsp
  4. Red-chili-1

Method:
  • Soak and wash the cow peas/Black eyed peas for minimum 6hrs.
  • Cut the onions and tomatoes into small pieces.
  • Heat a pressure cooker,add 3tsp of oil mustard seeds,cumin seeds,curry leaves,asafoetida and red-chili.
  • After popping the seeds add tamarind juice and mix well.Boil 10mins.
  • Add cow peas/black eyed peas,salt and mix well.
  • Add grind paste mix and close the lid.
  • Pressure upto 4 or 5 whistles.
  • Hot and serve with "Boiled Rice and Appalam".

  1. Makes for a very healthy side with hot steaming rice. in our house it is mandatory to have one ozichu curry.. This fits the bill perfectly..!
